Wolastoq Park – a walk through history
Free public access
Wolastoq is an Indigenous name meaning "the beautiful river"—a reference to the Saint John River that runs through the heart of this place.
The site once housed Centracare, the province's psychiatric hospital, built in 1853. After its closure, J.D. Irving, Limited purchased the site and transformed it into an urban green space, which opened to the public in 2005.
Irving Woodlands maintains the 17.5 acre park so it stays accessible and open to everyone, with wooden statues and harbour views that make it well worth the visit.

Historical Statues
A short hilltop loop takes you past 13 large, wood-carved statues of historical figures—a chance to learn some local history along the way.
Picnic Areas
Benches, picnic tables, and shelters are spread throughout the park for a peaceful lunch or coffee with a view.
Harbour Views
From up here, you see the Reversing Falls, the harbour, and the city stretched out below. It's the kind of view that makes you stop.
Community Space
The park welcomes community gatherings, cruise ship visitors, and local school track and field events. It's also a great spot to take in the annual fireworks.
