Rare Plant Found Near Petitcodiac

This spring, logging planner Ian Dennis was working on a private woodlot in the Petitcodiac area of New Brunswick when he looked down to see a downy rattlesnake plantain. Looking around, he spotted over 30 more within a few square metres. This is a very rare and important find in New Brunswick, as the plant is rated as S1, meaning there are five or fewer populations in the province. Our independent environmental certification programs require that we place a conservation buffer, including when we are working with private woodlot owners. The land owner shared this commitment to these rare plants and a buffer was established.

JDI's voluntary and award-winning Unique Areas program has grown from 29 sites in the 1980s to over 1450 sites to date on the lands we own and manage in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine. Our foresters go through rigorous annual rare plant training, to allow them to identify rare plants while on the job.  A great find like this one reflects the importance of good training and the passion of our foresters!
