End the summer at one of our award-winning conservation sites

The Labour Day long weekend is a great opportunity to squeeze in a last bit of summer fun before the season draws to a close and students head back to school. To this end, J.D. Irving, Limited’s conservation sites provide ample opportunities to get out and explore all that nature has to offer.

Spanning 2,149 sites, the conservation program encompasses significant nesting sites, rare plant habitats, watercourses and a variety of aesthetic sites that are perfect for a Labour Day picnic or hiking adventure. A few are highlighted below.

Anderson Lake

Anderson Lake is a joint conservation project between Irving Woodlands and Ducks Unlimited Canada. Hikers and ATV users enjoy access to the northern shores of the lake, while the lake itself is popular among fishers for its prize brook trout. Be sure to look along the northeastern shore for the remains of a purpose-built fishing boat with live wells built into the sides. You can find this lake in Musquash Parish in southern New Brunswick.

Fall Brook Falls

Fall Brook Falls Long Weekend 2024

Located near Boiestown in central New Brunswick, Fall Brook Falls is New Brunswick's highest continually running waterfall, with high cliffs on three sides. It’s a popular destination for hikers, swimmers and picnickers. The Fall Brook stream leads into a ravine, and there is a path along the stream that can be hiked with the help of rails and ropes.

Once you reach the gatehouse, there is an admission fee of $10, which is well worth the chance to experience the beautiful site.

Ayers Lake

This deep (64 feet) lake is recognized as one of 10 lakes in New Brunswick that host a self-sustaining population of lake trout. The lake and its surrounding land make for a beautiful hike with a rewarding landscape view from one of the peaks.

A road to the top and hiking trails throughout the site allow visitors to enjoy old stands of eastern hemlock and red spruce, large vernal pools and rare plants such as the blunt-lobed Grapefern and many species of lichen. This is a popular destination for hikers and ATV users. The hike is moderately challenging and takes an average of 4.5 hours return.
