Celebrate New Brunswick Day at one of our conservation sites

New Brunswick Day provides a perfect opportunity to celebrate the natural beauty the province has on offer. Over the holiday weekend, check out some of the treasures in your own backyard by visiting one of J.D. Irving, Limited’s conservation sites.

The company’s award-winning, voluntary conservation program currently conserves 2,149 sites significant for birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, invertebrates and plants as well as lakes and wetlands, geological, fossil and historic characteristics, aesthetics and more. A few are highlighted below.

Ayers Lake

The Ayers Lake lookout and environs is a site of great ecological significance located in York County, NB, about an hour north of Fredericton. The lake and surrounding buffer were originally set aside for conservation in 1996 because it was one of only 10 lakes province-wide that hosts a self-sustaining population of lake trout.

Explore the site by road up one of the peaks of by hiking one of the many trails in the area. On your walk, you will pass old stands of eastern hemlock and red spruce, large vernal pools and rare plants such as the blunt-lobed grape fern and several species of lichen.
