J.D. Irving, Limited’s tree planting program had small beginnings with 3000 trees planted in Black Brook, New Brunswick in 1957. In 1958 the company started the tree nursery in Juniper, N.B. Originally the goal was to produce one million trees. Sixty years later, the company planted its one billionth tree - a record for a private company.
This year, with the help of 139 tree planters across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Maine, we planted 15.5 million trees – and are committed to planting even more.
Our tree planters are highly valued for their hard work and dedication. Every year, we thank our student tree planters by providing post-secondary scholarships. This year, 54 scholarships were awarded to tree planters.
At J.D. Irving, Limited, tree planters plant an average of 12,000 to 15,000 trees each week. They’re an integral part of a value chain from the seedling in the forest to the tissue products on the store shelf.
We asked Ben King, a tree planter who joined us for the first time this summer, what his favourite part of the job was: "Tree planting is unique to all the other jobs out there. You get what you put into the job and at the end of each day, it feels good to know you did your absolute best."
