100 tree planters, 60 minutes, over 53,000 seedlings planted. It takes a great team to break a world record and that is what the J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) crew did near Sussex on May 20th, 2015. The previous Guinness World Record of trees planted in one hour was set in 2012 in India where 40,000 trees were planted.
JDI smashed the record – planting over 53,000 trees in one hour!
As part of our long-term commitment to sustainability we understand the importance of planting the future forests – it’s a promise we have been keeping since 1957. To date we have planted over 940 million trees – a national record in Canada. This year, JDI will plant over 20 million seedlings this summer thanks to a great team of over 200 tree planters.
JDI values the hard work of the students who plant our future forests by providing annual scholarships to help fund their university or college tuition payments. Over the last 15 years, JDI has supported hundreds of tree planter students with over $500,000 in scholarships!
The trees we plant make a big contribution towards reducing greenhouse gases. In its lifetime the average tree will absorb about 1 tonne of carbon dioxide. Over the next 50 years, internationally recognized research in partnership with UNB confirms JDI woodlands and forest products operations will be a net sink for carbon – absorbing over 92 million tonnes of CO2. That’s the equivalent of 18 million cars off the road for 1 year.
Congratulations tree planters on your new title, and thank you for all your hard work.
