All forest land owned or managed by J. D. Irving, Limited is Third Party Certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program Forest Management Standard – the largest certification standard in North America. This ensures that forest management and operations are conducted in a manner that is sustainable and protects the environment. J.D. Irving, Limited is audited every year to a number of SFI® standard indicators to ensure that the following SFI® standard   Forest Management objectives are met: Forest Management Planning; Forest Health and Productivity; Protection and Maintenance of Water Resources; Conservation of Biological Diversity; Management of Visual Quality and Recreational Benefits; Protection of Special Sites; Efficient Use of Fiber Resources; Recognize and Respect Indigenous Peoples’ Rights; Legal and Regulatory Compliance; Forestry Research, Science and Technology; Training and Education; Community Involvement and Landowner Outreach; Public Land Management Responsibilities; Communications and Public Reporting; and Management Review and Continual Improvement. 

    J.D. Irving, Limited also buys wood from private landowners to meet mill requirements. This is done using procurement processes that are Third Party Certified to the SFI® standard Fibre Sourcing Standard. J.D. Irving, Limited is audited every year to a number of SFI® program fiber sourcing indicators to ensure that the following SFI® program Fiber Sourcing objectives are met: Biodiversity in Fiber Sourcing; Adherence to Best Management Practices; Use of Qualified Resource and Qualified Logging Professionals; Legal and Regulatory Compliance; Forestry Research, Science and Technology; Training and Education; Community Involvement and Landowner Outreach; Public Land Management Responsibilities; Communications and Public Reporting; Management Review and Continual Improvement; Promote Conservation of Biological Diversity, Biodiversity Hotspots and High-Biodiversity Wilderness Areas; Avoidance of Controversial Sources including Illegal Logging; and Avoidance of Controversial Sources including Fiber Sourced from Areas without Effective Social Laws

      Meeting these criteria means that J.D. Irving, Limited is able to apply the SFI® standard seal of approval on products made from these forests – assuring the customer that the product they are buying came from responsibly managed forests.
